The recovery partition also contains OS X 10.9.5. I immediately re-formatted the 1 TB HDD (in the “lower” bay) and installed OS X 10.9.5. I don’t remember which OS version it came installed with. Use the Disk Utility in Applications/Utilites to format your hard drive as desired.

Select the SSD/External drive as your boot drive and continue. Click the Restore button to copy all your data over to the SSD, then shut down.Do the same with the SSD into the “Destination” field.

Drag the original drive’s icon from the left onto the “Source” field.
